How to mirror a YouTube video for dance practice

Learning from a video facing you means reversing every move in your head while trying to do it. Mirroring the picture removes that, and it is one press.

The problem with following a video head on

When the dancer faces you, their right is your left. Every move needs flipping before you can copy it, which costs attention you would rather spend on the movement. Mirroring the picture makes their right hand appear on the same side as yours, and the choreography can be copied directly.

Mirroring and looping an eight count

  1. 1Open Loop and paste the routine.
  2. 2Set the start and end around the eight count you are learning, so it repeats.
  3. 3Press M to mirror the picture, or find it under Fine tune.
  4. 4Slow it down with S until you can follow it, then bring it back up as you learn it.
  5. 5Copy the link. The mirror, the loop and the speed all travel with it.

Paste the routine you are learning.

What mirroring does and does not do

It is a horizontal flip of the picture, nothing more. Text in the frame reads backwards, and so does anything written on clothing, which is the giveaway that you are looking at a mirrored image rather than a differently shot one. The video itself is untouched; the flip happens in your browser on the way to the screen.

Mirror, loop and slow are table stakes in every dance app, and Playback does all three. What it also does, which they do not, is chain several of them: Cut holds up to twelve moments from as many as six different videos, so a whole routine broken into its counts, or the same move from three teachers, is one link.

No. It is a horizontal flip applied in your browser on the way to the screen. The video on YouTube is untouched, and text in the frame will read backwards.
