How to loop part of a YouTube video

YouTube's own Loop repeats the entire video. If you only want eight seconds of it, back to back, you need something that can hold two points at once.

What YouTube gives you

Right-click the player and there is a Loop option. It repeats the whole video from the beginning. That is genuinely useful for a track you want on in the background, and useless for the four seconds you are trying to learn, because you have to sit through everything else to come back around.

Looping one passage

1. 1Open Loop and paste the YouTube link.
2. 2Play to where the passage begins and press Start loop. Play to where it ends and press End loop.
3. 3It starts repeating immediately. Drag either red handle to move an edge; the picture follows the handle so you can see what you are trimming.
4. 4Copy the link. Whoever opens it gets the same loop, at the same speed, with your note if you left one.

Getting the edges right

Two things help more than anything else. The arrow keys move a whole second, and Shift with an arrow moves a tenth, which is usually the difference between a loop that feels musical and one that stutters. And Z zooms the bar in around the loop, so a four-second passage inside a forty-minute video is not two pixels wide.

One honest limitation: a seek lands on the nearest keyframe, so a start can sit a fraction of a second from where you set it. For a bar of music or a rally it never matters. For a single frame it does.

The keys worth knowing

1. 1L starts the loop and ends it. I and O set each point on its own.
2. 2Space pauses, R restarts the loop from the top.
3. 3S cycles slow motion, and the square brackets change the speed by 0.05 at a time.
4. 4Z zooms the bar, M mirrors the picture, N opens the note.

If what you want is to explain the passage rather than drill it, make a Playback instead: same start and end, plus a title, your take, and comments pinned to the exact frame they are about.
