YouTube link with a start and end time

YouTube links start anywhere. Ours end where you say.

Your video opens here.

Watch, youtu.be, Shorts and live links all work.

How it works

  1. 1

    Paste the video

A watch, youtu.be, Shorts or live link. If it already carries a time, that becomes the start.

  2. 2

    Mark the part

Press Start here and End here as it plays, drag the two handles, or type the times.

  3. 3

    Copy the link

Check it with Replay, then copy. Whoever opens it lands on that part.

Times can be typed as 1:44.5, 104.5, 1:02:03 or 1m44s. On a keyboard, Space plays and pauses, L marks the start and then the end, I and O set either one, R replays, and the arrows move a second (Shift for a tenth).

An example

A fourteen-second part of a guitar lesson, from 1:54 to 2:08: playback.tv/loop?v=1X2rW5ATdLQ&s=114&e=128. The id of the video, the start in seconds and the end in seconds: that is all a link holds.

Questions

Can a YouTube link have an end time?

YouTube's own share link carries a start and no end. An end works only inside an embed on a page you control. A link made here carries both, and the video plays in YouTube's own player on playback.tv.

What does the other person see?

A page on playback.tv with the video at your start time. It plays to your end time and goes round again, so what they watch is that part. They need no account. Some phones need one tap on the video before sound can start.

How exact are the times?

You can set them to a tenth of a second. YouTube's player then starts from the nearest point it can, usually within a fraction of a second. If the first word gets clipped, move the start back a little and press Replay.

Which links work?

Any public YouTube video that its uploader allows on other sites: watch, youtu.be, Shorts, live and embed links. A private video, or one with outside playback turned off, cannot be played here, and the tool says which it is.

Is the video downloaded or copied?

No. The link holds the video's id and your two times. The video stays on YouTube and plays in its own player. Playback does not download, change or host it.

Can I change the times after I copy the link?

The times live in the link, so an old link keeps its old times. Open it, move a handle and copy again, and the new link has the new times.
